Using Social Media Skills on Your Resume
Using Social Media Skills on Your ResumeThere are quite a few skills you need to learn if you're going to be an effective social media user and your resume needs to show them. If you really want to work in this field, you're going to have to give these skills up, but they can be very valuable to have if you're serious about your career choice. In order to make the most of your social media skills you need to be able to write information that is engaging and personal. Don't try to pretend to be somebody else and don't use the 'I' word when talking about yourself or others. If you can show that you're unique and interesting, your audience will feel compelled to follow you and talk to you on your personal account.Being able to respond quickly to questions and comments is also important to understand as it relates to the Internet. People want to get answers to their questions and respond to what you have to say as soon as possible. If you're going to be a real user and not just a tool to move the discussion along, you'll be able to do this without difficulty.Be aware of how the users in your site respond to comments and suggestions. While it's fine to have no response at all, be sure to use your words carefully to direct people to the actual site. If you make a comment, but provide no real information, this will take away from your ability to stand out from the crowd. There are many ways that people can use social media for networking. Many use the site to find friends, to meet people, and to find opportunities that are specific to their industry. With so many options, how can you make sure that your resume isn't forgotten? Keep it simple and use a short and succinct version of the same information on every page. While it's easy to overlook the power of social media skills, you need to realize how much your resume can change by creating an excellent site. You need to be able to craft a profile that showcases your best traits. Not only that, but you should use it to yo ur advantage to show off your unique skills. The great thing about social media is that it's a numbers game. You can't hope to reach a large number of people, unless you're willing to put in the time and effort that it takes to attract people to your page. If you've done your job well, you should find that you have a good following of prospects. This is one of the areas where there is a lot of room for your social media skills. You can make it easy for your potential employer to find you without overdoing it and you can utilize it to make yourself a better candidate. Even if you don't want to become a full-time social media user, there are plenty of times when you can use your skills for networking to help other people.

Changing Careers Where to Start
Changing Careers Where to Start Todays guest post by Shannon Suetos addresses a topic that is relevant to many of us: changing careers. This can be a long, yet VERY rewarding process. If youve changed careers, we want to hear your story! Give us your advice in the comments section below! Remember when we were little and adults asked, âwhat do you want to be when you grow up?â Some of us would say doctors, or teachers, or better yet a fire fighter! But how many of us actually stuck with that decision? Probably not manyâ"there are different reasons why, but most importantly because you grew up and your goals changed. So what happens when you go to college and decide you want to be a teacher? You start taking classes, and realize you really want to do something else. Is it ok? What about if you are almost done? Do you start over and get even more in debt with tuition? What if you have already started your teaching career? Do you go back to the drawing board? This scenario sounds familiar to many of us. According to BizCommunity.com, âpeople change their career five to seven times in their lifetime.â So the question, what do you want to be when you grow up, is just as relevant when you are 5 as when you are 35. Personal growth and change doesnt stop just because you are over the age of 18. The Bureau of Labor Statistics just came out with a study that reports, â5,000 janitors in America have doctoral degrees.â The study goes on to say, â17 million Americans are currently doing jobs that could be performed with simply a high school diploma or less which includes 317,000 waiters and waitresses, 80,000 bartenders, and 18,000 parking lot attendants.â So What Happens Next? Does it really matter if you change your mind? Will the career police arrest you? I donât think so. It is ok to change your mind, and actually it seems more normal than not. Finding a career you can be happy with should be the top priorityâ"along with being able to pay your bills of course. If you want to change careers, make a plan If you are thinking about changing careers, you should have a plan of action. Here are some things to consider: Do you currently have enough experience for a job in your desired field? If not, how can you establish yourself as an expert in your new field? How much time and money are you willing to put into making a change? Will you have to go back to school? Take a pay cut? If you are currently working in a full-time job, make sure your aspirations for a new career arent getting in the way of your current job. Until you get hired, you still need to have money coming in to take care of yourself and/or family. When setting up your new resume, feature your transferable skills rather than heavy industry jargon. Highlight experience that is appealing and relevant to your new profession. Remember that your new industry may have different resume standards and expectations- be sure to look at several resume examples before sending your new resume to a potential employer. Utilize the skills and network you already have to help make the leap into the next chapter in your life. Have you successfully changed careers? Please share your story howd you do it?!

5 Reasons Why AI Will Never EVER Replace Recruiters
5 Reasons Why AI Will Never EVER Replace Recruiters AI is clearly a hot topic in any recruitment office and has been for some time. With our increasing needs for instant gratification because of social media, how does this impact on the daily culture in recruitment businesses and what does this mean for the future of recruiters. AI is a disruptor and no recruiter dare ignore the way it has already changed the way recruitment operates. However, is it a threat to our existence in the near future? I wanted to present the above premise to a handful of fellow recruiters and the reaction was fairly balanced in truly believing that in a âtrueâ recruitment consultancy, the advent of AI can never replace human recruiters. Allow me to present my case, with help from the contributors who work in finance, IT and professional services recruitment: 1. AI wont have empathy for candidates Human Recruiters build relationships over a period of time and have empathy with the job hunters and clients. AI can never hope for a candidate to get their best job; cannot express their opinion or expertise to a client about whether to hire a candidate. Humans take time to build trust with their customers and AI will never be able to draw down on these relationships to make a difference to a process. If you think about your placements, how many of them come from just âknowingâ that your client will love your candidate and very often they donât match on paper but you rely on the history you have built up of both parties and the culture fit. AI cannot experience a culture or a personality 2. Human recruiters can actually SELL a job AI is very capable of matching up the algorithms of key skills and experience versus that on a candidates CV. However, it takes a human to know how to sell and present an opportunity, focusing on the âsofterâ elements and being persuasive if necessary. I personally have placed people who initially had said ânoâ to a company but they trusted me and realized that their initial perception of the company had been wrong. I canât be the only recruiter who has had this experience. AI is knowledgeable but AI does not have the capacity to think outside of the box of A matches A. 3. AI will never really influence the process AI is knowledgeable in acting on instructions and finding CVs based on a specific brief. However, AI cannot influence the process or challenge the job spec. Whereas human recruiters can do this and very often by consulting the clients expectations, you understand more about what the business needs and this may broaden the criteria for the right hire for them. Therefore, human recruiters are influencers and not simply box tickers which ultimately is all AI can ever be. 4. AI will never love their job like we do As functional as AI already is and will continue to be, the fact is, what has made me successful and other recruiters who work as I do, experts in their field, is my LOVE and PASSION for the job that I do. Ok, AI canât give up and walk out to go and get another job. But it is the love and genuine care for doing the job properly that makes me successful. And AI can never replace that pastoral care for getting the job done and not just perfunctorily. 5. Recruitment is a human being industry AI is methodical and based on data. However, recruitment is the ultimate âhuman being industryâ and therefore human recruiters will always be involved in the sector. Whilst portals and job boards already cope with Matching up a persons job need and a clients employment gap, it can never really hope to plan an individuals future career goal purely on data and analytics. It is a tactile process and this is something AI can never achieve. How is AI affecting your market and sector? Have you been pipped to the post on a job or vacancy because of a better match via AI? And how are you ringfencing your own recruitment career to ensure you embrace technology yet not be made redundant by AI?

How to Use the Science of Persuasion to Land Your Dream Job %
How to Use the Science of Persuasion to Land Your Dream Job â" % Itâs a day like no other when youâre sitting at the waiting area, with your credentials and paperwork clutched firmly between your hands just outside the Human Resource office of a company youâve dreamed to represent and work for.You dream of filling that vacancy while youâre observing the facial expressions and body language of that other candidate being interviewed by the HR officer through the clear glass door.evalYou try to read the Human Resource associateâs lips, trying to figure out what to say, what to show, how to persuade this hiring manager that you have something in you, whether it be a diploma, a certificate, a certain work related-life changing experience, that nobody else in this waiting room can hand over.Besides you, thereâs a candidate browsing through his envelope, boasting medals, certificates and diplomas, even pictures of himself with celebrities and key figures in your current industry. If we count all the achievements in his resume, it would have m ore words and paragraphs than this article.Moments later, the candidate youâve been observing has exited the Human Resource office, with a stern look in his eyes, you felt gravity shifting its forces with every footstep he takes as he leaves the building. You ask yourself, did he get the job?The candidate beside you put on a smug grin and confidently said âPoor guy, he mustâve been rejected. I saw the look of disappointment in his eyes. You know, you have something in common with that guy. Both of you have slim and lean resumes. Well, buddy, Iâm wishing you the best.â Then he gets called in. He approaches the HR associated with the confidence of an ancient conqueror about to invade and pillage a nation. He looked back and told you, âIâm gonna leave the door open so you can hear and learn a thing or two.âYou observed that the second candidate had an interesting way of responding to the Hiring Manager. He was listening to respond, rather than listening to understand. Fo r every question the hiring manager asks, this guy finds an opportunity to show something good about himself. Then thereâs this question from the hiring manager that shook the second candidate down to his very core.evalThe Hiring Manager asked âWhat was your biggest failure? And how did you deal with it?âThe 2nd candidate responded: âI have nothing bad on my record. I made good things happen, Iâm a genius. Look at my GPA. Sure, there were some mistakes and screw-ups with my past companies, under my watch, under the department Iâm handling, but I had absolutely nothing to do with it. I claim no accountability because itâs some idiotâs fault. Not mine.âThe Hiring Manager smiled and dismissed the 2nd candidate. Visibly flustered, the 2nd candidate hurriedly packs his papers, photos, and that resume which is longer than this article. He walks away quickly, not bothering to look at you. From the Hiring Managerâs open door, which the second candidate left open for you to learn a thing or two, the manager looks at you and signals you to come in.evalThe subtle skill of persuasion can make or break the job you are competing for against fellow candidates. You examine yourself, and examine situations youâve been in, including the encounter with two other candidates earlier, and make the best out of these observations. You take a deep breath. This is it. After the hiring manager asks you to sit down, this would be the point of no return. Make or break. Before you open your lips to greet the Hiring Manager, this article takes over and stops time. There are 6 main facets of the science of persuasion by Cialdini.RelatabilityReciprocityScarcityAuthorityConsistencyConsensus or Social Proof. Here, weâll analyze and connect examples from companies, employees and the story above between rival candidates. We would aim to improve our standards of emotional intelligence and mix it with a good sense of scientific persuasion to win over the trust of the hiring manag er.Nowadays, hiring managers tend to engage more with people with higher emotional intelligenceand relatability, hence letâs talk about Relatability.1) RelatabilityThere is a tremendous power that comes along with being likable and being liked. When people see you as somebody they want to be, you have the power to influence them. Same as your heroes, mentors, and idols. You engage with them because their likeness delivers a special significance to you. You see a better version of yourself through them. You aspire to be close to the example your mentors bring you.As long as you have heroes, your sense of humility would be on solid ground, because for as long as your heroes do amazing things, you wonât dwell on the delusion that you are the best that ever happened on earth, or in this article. This is a positive relatability. evalOn the other hand, take the example of the second candidate, his ambition precedes his emotional intelligence. He credits himself for accomplishments yet t akes no accountability for failures. He blames others. Here lies negative relatability. When somebody reminds you of something or someone you donât like, you still identify with them, however, unlike positive relatability, you aspire to be as far away from their example as possible. You can be better than the second candidate and develop a rapport with the hiring manager as long as you maintain harmony with your similarities and opposites.Dressing similarly as the Hiring Manager is a good start. Because it sends a signal that both of you can represent the company you want to work for in a collective sense. Being overdressed or ironically underdressed sends a signal that youâre treating the hiring manager as someone who isnât on equal ground as you.How the hiring manager speaks the language, whether soft-spoken or loud and boisterous should also set the tone on how you can respond. Being complementary to the Hiring Managerâs volume and speed of speech can also develop trust and liking.evalIf the Hiring Associate is soft-spoken, please do tone down. If the Hiring Manager is loud and has humor, level with his sense of charm and body language. Relatability is based on what is immediately seen, heard and felt from you. Because itâs human nature to find similarities and differences on first impressions. Make this one good for you.2) ReciprocityThe principle of reciprocity revolves around the feeling of indebtedness of one person to another which started from an unselfish act. The concept of paying it forward encourages the feeling of belonging between two people, which in turn also increases confidence and trust.Paying it forward as a business has many forms. Some businesses would let their customers choose a charity to support, some businesses give away a free month to their regular monthly charged customers. Now how do we pay it forward on a job hunt setting? Is it possible?Of course, it is. During an interview, when there is an opportunity for small talk, share your hobbies and interests with the interviewer. If you have the same interests, feed the interviewer with knowledge about your mutual interest he hasnât heard about. It truly helps to gear up on trivial knowledge.Another way to pay it forward is to offer your expertise on a subject when the Hiring Manager invites a manager from the department youâre applying for. This is your chance to express your interest and understanding of the job to the Department Manager by asking the right questions and sharing your opinion from expertise. Also, pay it forward by volunteering yourself to work on a few tasked assignments by the department manager after the interview. This way, youâve shown that youâre acting in good faith by initiating a collaboration, and this gesture shows genuine intentions because, even though thereâs no current way of knowing whether youâve landed the job or not, you have brought something on the table.3) ScarcityThe principle of Scarcity capitalizes on the rare and limited. Take jewelers for instance. They limit the production of a certain ring or wristwatch to commandeer a high price. Maximizing profit with the least amount of raw materials.Launch any product and label it as âLimitedâ, people would flock and will be willing to pay a higher price just to get a taste of that elusive exclusivity. Giant sports car makers also capitalize on exclusivity and scarcity by limiting the number of produced vehicles for a particular year.If you read car magazines or car shows on TV, you wouldâve heard of âOnly 25 madeâ or âOnly less than a hundred madeâ cars. Now, back to the HR managerâs office. How does an interviewee use the principle of scarcity in order to persuade the Hiring Managerâs favorable opinion?By telling them that you have been offered the same job by the companyâs competitors, you make yourself scarce because you have other options to pour all your commitments too. A sign that your interviewer favors you is when the negotiated salary increases.4) AuthorityLetâs say youâre trying to discover new music. You ask your friends one by one and realize that itâs not the best idea to ask a friend who exclusively listens to hip-hop to give you a list of recommendations on rock. You wonât ask a basketball athlete how to serve a ball on a tennis lawn. To each their own authority. With every field, thereâs a trusted figure. Thatâs why sport shoe manufacturers enlist influential, telegenic and photogenic athletes to endorse their products. This is why print ads and online presence of corporations will always include a man in a suit. This demonstrates authority. A face you could trust to be amazing and skillful within their given field. A nutritionist has authority over a friend whoâs imposing that you go on a diet.In the interview room, demonstrate your knowledge and expertise to the point that youâre seen as an expert by the hiring manager. Show him the results and numbers of your ex pertise. Like âIâve cut the cost for operation expenses by half, by adjusting one tiny little thingâ âI have influenced the workforce to stop smoking without prohibiting smoking. I simply compensated those workers who donât consume smoke breaks.â By demonstrating, your interview will no longer feel like youâre up against a thesis panel, questioning and challenging you, grading you on how well you defended your claims. By proving your expertise, you increase your strategic leverage over the 2nd candidate at the beginning of this article. He may be experienced, but youâre an expert. You get the job done more efficiently because you understand your job on an atomic level.5)ConsistencyConsistency is composed of inertia and momentum. Take the food industry, for example, there are restaurants and food joints that have already lasted for more than a decade. Some dishes have been proven to be truly great ever since its inception, till the current date, the taste delightfully remains the same. However, there are some dishes that, as time goes on, the quality gradually decreases. On a business level, consistency is synonymous to reliability. Like a car that consistently starts its engines no matter the season, whether itâs cold or hot outside.Consistency is a display of strength in such a way that no matter the odds, the place where benefits come from seems infinite.Consistency can be found in hardwired routines. Such as cooking daily breakfast for yourself, or your family, or doing laundry weekly. Now how do we bring these hard-wired habits to benefit your interview?By showing your capabilities from your past companies and offering to start right away, you demonstrate consistency and inertia. âIâm used to writing 5 articles a week for my past company. After the interview, would you like me to write and edit 20 articles over the month?â âIâm wired to get to work 10 minutes early every day, otherwise, I find myself in a rather unpleasant mood.â By listing things you are reliable at and proving that youâre consistent with them, you get plus points from your interviewer.6) Social ProofSocial proof is a seek and you shall find a scenario. Letâs say youâre at a band tour event and there are many bands playing, you get an idea who is the next big thing by seeing which band attracts and engages the most people in the said event. Same with movies, you perceive that a certain movie is better than others because thereâs been a consistently long line of willing cinema patrons, going for reruns again and again. Social proof lies on the principle that the crowd or the scene speaks for you.Social proof requires that you have done amazing things for people, communities, scenes or past companies. This is where you make use of your references well. Please avoid writing âavailable upon requestâ on your references, because your references can make or break the deal of you landing the job!Examine your conscience and list the pe ople and communities that youâve helped and gained trust and confidence with, because their favorable opinion of you may land you that job youâve always wanted!A job interview can just be as short as 10 minutes or as long as over an hour, it takes a few hours to get ready, from dressing up to getting to the building. But surely, being prepared and knowledgeable about the science of persuasion can land you on a long-lasting career.Wishing you all the best, happy job hunting!

College Grads Living with your parents - Hallie Crawford
College Grads Living with your parents That stigma of living home with your parents for the most part has disappeared. With a rough economy and a tough job market, college grads often find relief by moving back in with their parents after college graduation. It is becoming an increasingly popular action for young adults (maybe not such good news for parents of college grads though). Moving back home after college graduation can be a good thing (bear with me parents). My client Katie is a great example. When Katie came to coach with me she was a new college grad. She didnât want to just settle into any old job and she just wasnât sure what it was she wanted to do. She felt like she had graduated, but now what. She kept tossing around the idea of grad school, but she didnât know if that was the best decision. By moving back in with her parents after college she was able to take some time to figure out what she really wanted. It provided her with some financial stability and space. She wasnât pressured to make a haste decision. Eventually through career coaching Katie decided that she really did want to go to graduate school in order to achieve her now clear career goals. By living with her parents she was able to step back as a new college grad and make a strong decision on the question âwhat do I want to do nowâ. The reason that Katie was successful in moving in with her parents after graduation was because she had a very specific plan. She knew that it was short-term and she had action steps to get her out of their house. Instead of getting sucked into any old 9-5 job right out of college, she was able to regroup and really think about her future. Moving back in with your parents can be a great alternative if you need a little extra time and support to get on the right track after graduation. I have had countless clients who are in this boat. The key is to not make this a permanent stay. It can be easy to get comfortable so you need to set goals for yourself and make a plan for how long you will stay. It shouldnât be long-term. You also need to be responsible around the house and pull your own weight. Hanging out on the couch all day is not beneficial to you. I read this great story in the New York Post recently titled: Go ahead, move back in with the folks. Check it out for more information on moving back with your parents after college graduation.
